staying, and for how\u202flong?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u202fsurvey\u202fquestion,\u202f<strong>\u2018Where are you staying, and for how\u202flong?\u2019<\/strong>\u202faimed\u202fto\u202funderstand\u202fwhether the four generations of business travellers were showing different patterns of travel to urban,\u202frural\/\u202fremote\u202fand suburban areas and why this\u202fmight\u202fbe.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key finding:<\/strong>\u202fOverall, the survey was consistent with known trends, with all ages travelling most to urban centres for short stays of between 1\u20133 nights.\u202fThe data suggests that younger generations may be sent\u202foutside cities,\u202fwith\u202fGen Z and Millennial travellers taking longer trips when it comes to suburban and remote\/ rural areas\u202fcompared\u202fto older generations \u2013\u202fthis could be interpreted\u202fas consistent with more senior staff delegating\u202flonger assignments\u202ffrom above.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Urban:\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All generations stay for between 1\u20133 nights\u202fin urban areas\u202ffar more for than any other length of time:\u202f<strong>60%\u202f<\/strong>of Gen Z,\u202f<strong>60%<\/strong>\u202fof Millennials,\u202f<strong>55%<\/strong>\u202fof Gen X, and\u202f<strong>39%<\/strong>\u202fof Baby Boomers.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a spike in Gen Z travellers staying between 8\u201328 nights.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No Gen X or Baby Boomer travellers reported travel to urban areas over 8 nights.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Suburban<\/strong>:\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Millennials stay longest in suburban areas\u202f<strong>(32%)<\/strong>\u202ffollowed by Gen Z\u202f<strong>(28%)<\/strong>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trips of between 4\u20137 nights and 8\u201328 nights are much more common for Gen Z travellers than any other age group.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Remote\/ rural:\u202f<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Approximately double the percentage of Gen Z and Millennial travellers are staying in rural and remote areas between\u202f1\u20133\u202fnights compared to Gen X and Baby Boomers.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More Gen Z are staying in rural\/remote areas between 4\u20137 nights than any other generation combined.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What type of accommodation are business travellers staying in?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next survey question we focused on was the type of accommodation that\u202frespondents stayed in during their stays.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked, \u2018What type of accommodation do you tend to stay in when travelling for business?\u2019\u202fGen Z and Millennial\u202ftravellers report\u202fstaying\u202fin three-star hotels or below more often than those in the generations above them,\u202fwhich chimes with traditional ideas that more senior employees expect and receive a higher class of accommodation.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sector plays a role\u202fand can override preference,\u202fin that\u202fwhen employees in industries\u202fsuch as construction and engineering\u202ftravel to remote areas where there are few hotels\u202fthey\u202fwill,\u202fof\u202fnecessity,\u202fbe\u202fstaying in\u202fnon-hotel accommodation\u202fsuch as single-family homes.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/876;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both survey results and interviewees agree that Gen Z has started to favour non-hotel accommodation \u2013 serviced apartments, short-term rentals, and guesthouses or B&amp;Bs \u2013 and even staying with friends and family. These decisions are likely to be driven by considerations around wellbeing.\u202fAs discovered\u202fduring interviews with travel professionals, this preference\u202fis especially true\u202ffor\u202frecent graduates.\u202fThis\u202fhas\u202fpossible\u202fimplications\u202ffor the future as these employees begin to travel\u202fmore and\u202ffavour accommodation other than hotels even in city centres. Will this influence the accommodation choices of other generations?\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f8f4f6\"><em>\u201cYounger travellers want to be able to take their bikes, cook for themselves, and live with work colleagues, especially recent graduates.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/em><br><br><strong>Adam Hickingbotham, Travel Procurement Manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atkinsrealis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AtkinsR\u00e9alis<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another growing trend\u202fnoted by a travel professional not confined to younger travellers is\u202femployees asking\u202fto bring family members on assignment with them\u202f\u2013 the\u202f\u2018blended not extended\u2019 business stay. This\u202fis viewed as a positive\u202fcontribution\u202fto the wellbeing of those employees\u202fwho\u202ftravel on longer-term assignments\u202f\u2013\u202fespecially\u202fwhen\u202fextended travel crosses major holidays.
