About Perth

Overview

Perth has been described as ‘the loneliest city in the world’, given that to the west lies thousands of miles of ocean, while to the east there is a large expanse of desert. However, while there might not be much else in the surrounding region, Perth is a genuinely exciting city in its own right.

Where is Perth?

Perth is the capital of the Australian state of Western Australia and is located on the Indian Ocean coast. It’s a long way from the other major Australian cities – 2,044 miles to Sydney, 1,691 miles to Melbourne, and 1,324 miles to Adelaide. However, it’s a large city – the fourth most populous conurbation in Australia – with the Greater Perth area having a population of approximately 2.2 million, so there’s plenty to do here.

The official language here is English, but almost 40% of the city’s inhabitants can speak another language. Mandarin is Perth’s second most commonly spoken language, followed by Korean, Cantonese, and Portuguese.

The currency you will use in Perth is the Australian dollar, with 100 cents making up one dollar.

Perth airport has direct flights to London and can be reached from Europe and the United States with a simple change of plane at an Asian airport. It also has one of the most frequent local train services of any Australian city.

Business in Perth

Western Australia generates more of Australia’s GDP than any other state and generates almost 50% of the country’s exports. Perth is responsible for the bulk of the state’s output, given that 75% of WA’s population live here.

Wages have remained high, and because house prices are lower here than in Melbourne or Sydney, Perth’s residents enjoy an excellent standard of living.

The largest industries in Perth include professional services, mining of gold and iron, science and technology, healthcare, oil refining, construction, and local government.

Well-known companies with significant operations in Perth include the Big Four accountancy firms (EY, PwC, KPMG, and Deloitte), Accenture, IBM, Apple, Rio Tinto, Shell, Google, and Amazon.

Visiting Perth

Some of the best and wide range of things to do in Perth are the outdoor attractions, such as the beaches, river, and gardens.

There are no less than 19 beaches along the city’s waterfront, including surfers’ mecca Scarborough Beach; sunset picnic spot City Beach; and Rottnest Island, which is less well used by virtue of the fact you can only access it by ferry.

A scenic cruise along the Swan River is well worth the ticket price, while Kings Park and Botanic Garden is a superb showcase of Australia’s unique plant life.

Perth catered culture lovers as well. The renowned West Australian Opera and West Australian Ballet both perform at the Perth Cultural Centre, while the Art Gallery of Western Australia – on the same site as the Cultural Centre – houses works by Spencer and Turner alongside many paintings by 20th century British and Australian artists.

Perth, one of the largest cities, has a sizeable East Asian community, shopping centre and many superb restaurants celebrating the cuisine of this region. Of course, self-catering apartments in Perth allow travellers the flexibility to cook at home too, and Situ’s properties come with fully-equipped kitchens and dining area.

Transport

By Air

Perth International Airport is eight miles north-east of the city centre. From this airport, you can fly directly to around 40 destinations. Many of these destinations are cities in Australia – such as Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Cairns – or the Middle East – Doha and Dubai – or the Far East – Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong, not mentioning London and United States as well.

By Rail

Transperth operate local train services to surrounding towns such as Butler, Armadale, Midland, Fremantle and Mandurah. Depending on the time of day and the route, train frequency might be anything between every five minutes and every 30 minutes. Services typically cease around midnight.

By Bus

There are many bus routes serving Perth and surrounding areas. Buses are typically free to use in the city centre and Fremantle, and here buses might run every 15 minutes between 6am and 7pm, and less frequently in the evening.
