Solving the unsolvable in the Arctic Circle and a remote area of Scotland | Corporate travel in isolated locations

Not every project comes with a postcode. Some come with a pin on a map and a note that says: “Somewhere within an hour of here.” When two clients in the energy sector needed to house twenty workers in one of the most remote areas of the Arctic Circle and forty in the far north of Scotland, they came to Situ with one simple brief: “Find something that works.”

In the face of such a challenging brief, Situ immediately swung into action to address the remote nature of the locations, understand the clients’ specific needs, and to help the two teams that needed to be housed – comfortably and for the long haul.

The challenge

Both projects came with logistical complexity built in. In the Arctic Circle, one client needed to house twenty individuals near a site deep in the region’s interior, while the other required accommodation for forty workers in a remote area in northern Scotland. Each group needed parking for work vehicles and somewhere to stay for up to six months.

There were no hotels nearby and no serviced apartments: just sparse infrastructure and a lot of distance to cover.

Beyond location, both clients had similar needs:

  • Comfortable, long-stay housing
  • Private or semi-private facilities
  • Laundry, cooking, and communal space
  • Accessibility for work vehicles
  • Flexibility around costs and amenities
The challenges Situ's client were facing before working with Situ

The solution

In both cases, Situ started from scratch, quickly swinging into action to research options, call on local partners, and negotiate directly with property owners to make the brief possible.

In the Arctic Circle, we secured a full lodge for the twenty-person team. Each worker had a twin bed in a shared room with an en-suite bathroom, and the group shared a communal lounge, kitchen, and laundry. The lodge even had a pub on site, which gave the team a place for evening meals – no small detail when your nearest town might be hours away.

In rural Scotland, we found a holiday park offering wooden lodges, not caravans, with enough capacity to house forty individuals in shared two-person units. We negotiated to include towels and tea towels – something not normally provided– so there was no need to pack extras or source them locally. The park also offered unlimited vehicle parking and communal laundry facilities, with usage bundled into the weekly rate. All of this was managed clearly and up front, giving the client predictable costs for a long-term stay.

The solutions Situ delivered to support the client's business accommodation needs

The result

Both projects were delivered successfully. Workers were housed in safe, practical, and comfortable accommodation – right where they needed to be, and with no long commutes or compromise on the basics.

In an industry that often relies on hotel chains and urban networks, these projects prove that Situ can deliver beyond the typical. We don’t just have properties – we have great partners, unlimited resourcefulness, and a team that enjoys solving problems.

When the brief sounds impossible, that’s when it gets interesting.
