Where is Brisbane?

Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, lies in the centre of the South East Queensland metropolitan region. Here, the Brisbane River falls into the Morton Bay of the Coral Sea.

The city and its suburbs stretch along the sunny coast of the Pacific. The nearest cities are Sunshine Coast, which is 100 kilometres to the north and Gold Coast lying 80 kilometres to the south.

The ample network of motorways around Brisbane links the city to neighbouring New South Wales and the inner territories. Use the M1 to drive south along the coast to Sydney. Follow the A2 to the west across Queensland to the inner territories.

English is the first language of the majority of Australians, and the national currency is the Australian Dollar. Currency exchange is available at banks, hotels, and international airports. ATMs are widespread.

Business Opportunities in Brisbane

The business climate in Brisbane is ideal for fostering economic growth. The city has a strong base of high-quality infrastructure and qualified personnel, making it a safe starting point for innovation and progress. A solid balance of industrial growth and sustainability provides an ideal microclimate for new enterprises and inspires Brisbane’s high quality of urban life.

Domestic and international companies constantly choose Brisbane as their headquarters for expansion or relocation and draw large numbers of expatriates and qualified and multilingual professionals.

Brisbane boasts a high-quality business infrastructure available at relatively low costs. In combination with low business running costs and affordable living, it is no surprise that Brisbane has become a vibrant and prosperous business hub.

Brisbane ranks very highly in terms of foreign direct investment as well. The city’s progressive economic environment offers security for investment and large returns. The major contributing factors here are its stable political environment, steady population growth, and the commitment and joint efforts of the public and private sectors.

The local government of Queensland and Brisbane City Council are business-friendly and encourage domestic and foreign investors alike. Australia is among the top ten world countries that are favourable for doing business in terms of taxation, legislation, and the amount of red tape at the local and federal levels.

The most successful industries of Brisbane include health and life science research, the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry, the construction industry, and IT and tech. Employment in Brisbane is in constant growth and the job market is known to be livelier than those of Sydney and Melbourne.

Tech start-ups form a large share of this constant growth, offering a range of services from software and mobile apps to alternative energy solutions. The economic growth is well balanced between the private and the public sectors.

Things to Do in Brisbane

The lifestyle in Brisbane is inspired by its spectacular outdoors and glorious weather, with over 280 days of sunshine. The city is vibrant and informal, very different to the sophisticated Melbourne or the highly urban metropolis of Sydney.

Part of this vitality is due to the proximity of seaside resorts, their casinos, and live music venues. The other significant contribution to the city’s unique vibe is made by the diversity of its inhabitants. Expatriates constantly choose Brisbane to relocate and bring their cuisines, arts and crafts, and languages.

Enjoy alternative shopping and varied street food in one of Brisbane’s numerous markets. Anything from fresh produce to artisan fashion is readily available from a variety of markets around the city. Choose markets selling Asian and African food for a brief experience of local food and culture.

One of the city’s big advantages is its gateway position to the natural reserves of Queensland. The Scenic Rim with its mountain ranges and rainforests is one of the most popular sites for eco-tourism, and its status as a World Heritage Site is more than well deserved. Brisbane is also very close to Hervey Bay, a popular spot for whale watching and an access point to the southern Great Barrier Reef.

Explore the variety of nearby islands on a day island getaway, from tiny rocky outcrops to more family-friendly sandy strips away from the city coastline. All islands here are as stunning as they are diverse, and only a short boat trip away. No wonder locals have always favoured this trip for a picnic day or a weekend away from the city.

Transport

By Air

Most foreign visitors tend to arrive in Brisbane by air at the international airport. This is located 14 km northeast of Brisbane’s central business district. The airport is the main hub for the Australian airlines Virgin, Qantas, and Jetstar. Together, these operate dozens of regular international and domestic flights across the Asia-Pacific Region, to the Middle East, and to the West Coast of the USA.

Catch the Airtrain from the airport to the Central Station of Brisbane. The train picks up passengers from international and domestic arrivals and takes them to the city centre within 20 minutes. There is a shuttle every 20-30 minutes, and travel can be paid for with a Go Card or a single-fare ticket. Buy your tickets online in advance from the Airtrain website.

By Rail

Brisbane’s train network connects all the main attractions of the city and many of its surrounding suburbs. Trains run from early morning until late night every day from the Central Station and Roma Street Station in the city centre. They connect all main destinations, including the South Bank, the airport, Queensland Museum, and the Gallery of Modern Art.

By Bus and Coach

All public transport in Brisbane is united by one network and uses the same ticket system. Purchase a Go Card to pay for all your travel from Translink, the city transport operator company. The card can be bought and topped up at the airport, at city train stations, and at convenience stores. Use top-up machines or pay at the counter. Remember to swipe your card as you board and as you leave the transport. The card can be used not only in Brisbane itself but in the neighbouring Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast as well.

Catch a CityGlider to leave Brisbane and go to the nearest suburbs, West End, or the Gabba Stadium. The buses run every ten to fifteen minutes.

By Ferry

It's easy to get around central Brisbane by ferry. City Hopper Ferry links the city centre and the South Bank, while City Cat Ferry will take you to some of the main attractions. Pay with a Go Card or purchase a single-fare ticket.

By Taxi

The taxi service in Brisbane is reliable and affordable. Two main companies operate the service and their cars are easy to spot, as they are bright yellow or black and white. The fares are regulated between the main companies and depend on the time of day. There is a base fare for boarding and a fare per kilometre. Night hours are the most expensive between midnight and five am as the public transport network is closed.
