Where is Accra?

Accra is the capital and largest city in the West African country of Ghana. The capital is located on the country’s southern coast, on the Gulf of Guinea.

Approximately 2.2 million people live within Accra’s city limits, while the larger Greater Accra Metropolitan Area has a population of around four million.

The second largest city in Ghana is Kumasi. It’s 125 miles northwest of Accra. Travel in a northerly direction to the third largest city, Tamale, 269 miles away from the capital. Tema is a city 15 miles northeast of Accra and part of the Greater Accra area. Travel 263 miles to the west of Accra to reach the Cote d’Ivoire capital of Abidjan. The capital of Togo is Lome. This is 105 miles east of Accra.

You can fly to Accra from many places in Europe, the United States, Africa, and the Middle East. However, the city doesn’t have an extensive public transport network.

The official language of Ghana is English. This is probably the best language to speak when doing business and visiting tourist sites in Accra. Many of the population also speak French. The local language is called ‘Ga’ and is also widely spoken by the capital’s residents. The currency of Ghana is the cedi, with 100 pesewas making up one cedi.

Invest in Accra

Ghana is one of the most stable and most democratic nations in Africa. The Government has a very pro-business agenda, and the country has strong business links to the United Kingdom – the UK was the former colonial power here and Accra is on the same time zone as London.

Ghana is home to many small- and medium-sized companies, alongside some well-known international corporations. Most registered companies are based in the Greater Accra area and the adjoining city of Tema, which contributes around one-third of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product.

The country has been one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies since the start of the 21st century.

The principal industries in Accra include the mining of gold and other resources, renewable energy, tourism, agriculture, food processing, petrochemicals, financial services, and telecommunications.

Well-known companies with a presence in Accra include KPMG, PwC, Vodafone, Nestle, Goldman Sachs, Barclays, Unilever, Ericsson, IBM, Microsoft, and Philips.

Networking opportunities in Accra are offered by various organisations. For example, the Global Woman Business Club hosts events and business training for professional women. The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce seeks to foster business links between the two nations, and also offers business support and advice to its members

Things To Do in Accra

One of the most notable historical attractions in Accra is Black Star Gate, also known as Independence Arch. This imposing structure commemorates Ghana’s independence in 1957. However, the military guards might stop you taking pictures of the monument.

The Artists Alliance Gallery is one of the best modern art galleries in West Africa. It houses a fine collection of paintings and sculptures from local artists. Art is available to buy at affordable prices.

The golden sands of Labadi Beach – also known as La Pleasure Beach – are a bustling hive of activity around the clock. By day, people flock to the beach for surfing or horse riding, or to sample the local gin and street food. At night, there is often live music and raves.

For a quieter experience, head for Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where gardens, statues, and fountains are set around a museum building that commemorates the country’s first President.

Osu is another place you can spend the day. This is a great area for shopping and entertainment. You can browse the shops, try tasty food, or perhaps visit some other attractions. These include Osu Castle, which was built by the Danes, and is sometimes called Christiansborg. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and an important place to learn about Ghana’s slave history and European colonial rule.

Or visit Jamestown, a fishing port where you can still see colonial architecture. Visit the colourful street markets or the Jamestown lighthouse. This was built in the 1930s and stands 92ft tall. There are amazing views across the Gulf of Guinea if you climb to the top.

Accra has fine dining restaurants where you can enjoy different international food. These include Japanese, French, Mediterranean, North African, West African, and Ghanian cuisine.

Alternatively, Situ’s serviced apartments in Accra all come with a fully-fitted kitchen if you choose to stay in for the evening.

It has direct flights to around 30 cities, including New York, Washington, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Dubai, Cairo, Nairobi, and Johannesburg. There are also internal flights to Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi.

There is one train a day in each direction between Accra and the nearby city of Tema. The journey takes around 80 minutes and goes via Odaw, Achimota, Batchona, and Asoprochana.

By Bus

There are several companies operating bus services in and around the capital, with buses operating as frequently as every 10 minutes on the major routes at peak times. Accra is also noted for its ‘tro-tro’ minivans, which you can hail from any spot.
