About Balham

Overview

Quietly sitting next to the much busier Clapham, the South London district of Balham has become a place for the more discerning business traveller in recent years, enabled by the growing stock of Balham serviced apartments.

About Balham

For an area in South London, Balham is surprisingly relaxed and peaceful. In fact, it lacks the pretensions sometimes found elsewhere in the English capital. If this was once something to be made fun of, it seems to be serving Balham well in recent years, helping to make the district popular with the middle-class professional crowd. The small neighbourhood in the London Borough of Wandsworth has a population of 15,000 and sits between four south London commons; Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common, Tooting Graveney and Tooting Bec Common.

In Travelcard Zone 3, with an underground station on the Northern Line and, on the over ground line, with trains running into London Victoria every 5 minutes, Balham is a good choice for those seeking to stay longer in the city. Our open plan Balham furnished housing can be found not just in the centre of the district itself too, but also bordering neighbouring areas such as Earlsfield, Battersea and Clapham. At guests choice, they can also be within easy walking distance of Clapham, Wandsworth or Tooting Bec Commons, making the most of Balham’s nearby green spaces.

BUSINESS IN BALHAM

Balham may not be the most recognised neighbourhood in the country, or even the capital for that matter, but its the lifestyle and people that make the area one to consider for business and work. The culture is lively thanks to the array of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and venues in the neighbourhood, meaning the people are often out-and-about and, ultimately, fuelling the local economy.

Over eighty per cent of the local population are also economically active whilst nearly 70% of the working-age people have Level 4 Qualifications. Both statistics rank higher than the area of Wandsworth as a whole and show promising signs of a business climate embedded with success. Booking stays in Balham furnished short lets enable corporates the chance to do business comfortably, with everything they need at their fingertips such as free Wi-Fi, fully equipped kitchens, private gardens, en suites and ample living space.

HISTORY OF BALHAM

Notable history linked with Balham is relatively limited. It appears in the Domesday Book as ‘Belgeham’ which meant something along the lines of ‘smooth or rounded enclosure’. It was around this time that the area was mostly just covered by woodland. The minimal records of Balham since the Saxons settled there suggests little activity in the area in the following centuries. Regarding historical acknowledgement, Balham remained mildly irrelevant up until the eighteenth century. It was then that the first large housing developments began in the neighbourhood.

Not much later the St Mary’s Church was opened as a place of worship for the locals. As a greater sense of community grew, so did the number of establishments such as businesses, shops and finer housing. Perhaps the biggest sign of this growth was the arrival of the Balham railway station in 1856. The opening of the tube station then came in 1926. Although much has changed since then, many of the neighbourhood’s buildings (pubs, houses, attractions etc.) still remain and reflect an important time in Balham’s history. Any guest staying at Balham aparthotels can be just a minute walk away from enjoying the history connected to the area.

LIFE IN BALHAM

Balham is great for dining out and it is the coffee shops and little cafes that are the real reflectors of the area's character. They are dotted across the neighbourhood, but places to eat are numerous too. Whether it be a Sunday Roast at Lambert’s, a sweet treat at the Blackbird Bakery, or authentic Italian cuisine at The Honest Italian, guests in Balham corporate housing for sure has a great variety of eatery options to satisfy any visitor.

The Hildreth Street Market is also a highlight of the area, often recognised as a ‘secret south London gem’. A significant cash injection recently has funded this local go-to destination right at the heart of Balham, and it is its status that helps draw a crowd to the local businesses in Balham.

Overnight stayers in Balham extended stay apartments may be looking for a night out, and this may revolve around what’s on at ‘The Bedford’. Not only is it a great pub, but also a live venue for top comedy acts and music. Performances from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Paolo Nutini have taken place here. Its reputation for good quality food has been heightened too in recent times, making The Bedford a standout attraction in the neighbourhood.

Ultimately, as small as the neighbourhood of Balham is, it's environment packs a real punch. Not only is the business infrastructure up to standard, but the atmosphere and local attractions make staying in Balham corporate accommodation a prospect for both success and pleasant .
