Guangzhou is to be found in the south-eastern corner of China. With a population of approximately 15 million, it’s the third most populous city in China, behind only Beijing and Shanghai. The city has grown rapidly in recent years and this trend is expected to continue.

Just beyond, 85 miles to the south-east of Guangzhou, is the Chinese-owned territory of Hong Kong. Shanghai is 753 miles away to the north-east, while it’s 1,171 miles in a northerly direction from Guangzhou to Beijing.
China’s currency is officially called the renminbi, but the actual unit of account you will use to pay for goods and services when you’re here is called the yuan.
In Guangzhou, you are likely to find large numbers of people who speak Mandarin Chinese and many more whose first language is Cantonese Chinese. Many of the locals are bilingual and speak both. However you might struggle to find any English speakers here, or indeed anyone who speaks an ‘international’ language to a good standard, even if some of the signs on the transport network are written in English.
The city’s huge airport has direct connections to almost 200 destinations across all continents. In Guangzhou itself, the local train services are incredibly comprehensive.
Both in Guangzhou and China as a whole, the economic growth seen in recent years has been quite remarkable, with annual growth in Gross Domestic Product sometimes as high as 10%.
This prosperous city is a magnet for foreign investment and is home to an unusually large number of billionaires, according to the Hurun Global Rich List.
Some of the principal industries in Guangzhou include automobile manufacture, electronics, telecommunications, logistics, textiles, software, and petrochemicals. Well-known companies with operations in the city include Huawei, Ericsson, Cisco, IBM, Mars, Procter & Gamble, Amazon, HSBC, Accenture, Deloitte, and KPMG.

The city boasts a number of fantastic wildlife spotting sites, including Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park, the Star Lake wetlands, and Guangzhou Zoo, which has more than 5,000 animals and more than 400 species.
Make sure you see some of the city’s distinctive buildings, such as the elaborately-carved figures at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall Folk Craft Museum, and the twin boulder design of Zaha Hadid’s ultra-modern Opera House. There are several Buddhist temples in Guangzhou, but perhaps none quite as elaborate as the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, with its adjoining Flower Pagoda. One of the best times to visit is in February, for the Spring Festival Flower Fair, when the streets of the city are decorated with a dazzling array of blooms.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is 21 miles north of the city centre. It serves almost 200 destinations worldwide, including New York, Toronto, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Moscow, Istanbul, Helsinki, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Melbourne, Sydney, Seoul, and Tokyo.
Other Chinese cities with direct flights to Guangzhou include Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Huangzhou, and Harbin.
The city has four main-line stations – Guangzhou Railway Station, North Station, South Station, and East Station - and inter-city trains depart from all of these.
The number of trains leaving Guangzhou is simply bewildering. For example, there are more than 200 services per day to Shenzen, with the journey taking just 30 minutes on the fastest services. Thirty trains per day make the one-hour journey to Hong Kong. Despite the significant distances involved, it can take as little as four hours to reach Wuhan (60 services per day) and you can be in Beijing or Shanghai in as little as eight hours on one of the five daily high-speed services.
Other cities served by trains from Guangzhou include Nanning, Huangzhou, Nanjing, Harbin, Foshan, Chongging, and Nanjing.
The Guangzhou Metro has almost 300 stations on 14 lines. It connects all of the major railway stations in the city, the airport, the coach terminal, and tourist destinations such as the Zoo and Opera House. Services continue until midnight and operate as frequently as every two minutes during peak hours.
You won’t struggle to find bus services in Guangzhou either, as there are 1,200 routes in the city, many of which operate through the night. It might be difficult to locate where your bus leaves from, however, as the city has no less than 15 bus stations.
Make sure you get a Yang Teng Chong Card, which allows you to pay for journeys by both bus and Metro, and to transfer between the two modes of transport.
Guangzhou also has long distance coach services to Dongguan, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Xiamen, Hong Kong, and certain other cities in the region.
