Where is Jersey City?

Jersey City is located in the north-eastern corner of the US state of New Jersey. Just three miles to the east of its city centre, across the Hudson River, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Lower Manhattan in New York City. The Holland Tunnel, underneath the river, is the quickest road transport route between the two city centres, but you can also travel across the river by train, bus or ferry.

Another very large city, Philadelphia, is 91 miles southwest of Jersey City. Home to around 270,000 people, Jersey City is the second-most populous city in New Jersey.

The city claims to have more people using public transport than almost anywhere else in the US. If you wish to explore the wider region, fast, frequent and convenient rail and bus services will get you to New York, or other towns and cities in New Jersey.

Jersey City is within 20 miles of three major airports, so getting here from almost anywhere in the world is also very easy. We also ideally have both long and short term rentals in Jersey City within a short drive of these airports too.

Business in Jersey City

Jersey City is a prosperous area - the average median household income here rose dramatically in the late 2010s and is well above the US national average. Conveniently, rental prices for Jersey City apartments are affordable too.

A high proportion of those residents in Jersey City were born outside of the United States, and many of these arrivals are younger people. It’s also a very highly educated city. There are three major universities in the city: New Jersey City University, St Peter’s University and Hudson County Community College.

The local economy is largely service based, with significant numbers of people employed in professional services, financial services, real estate, scientific occupations and healthcare.

The city council continues to encourage companies to fill their vacancies locally. Its new payroll tax, introduced in 2018, is only paid by businesses on the wages of employees who are resident outside the city. The Jersey City Economic Development Corporation seeks to assist local businesses in creating employment opportunities. Hudson County, of which Jersey City is the administrative centre, has its own Chamber of Commerce to promote the interests of the local business community.

Companies with operations in Jersey City include ICAP, E*Trade, Provident Bank, Google, McKinsey, Apple, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Accenture, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Bloomberg.

Visiting Jersey City, NJ

Jersey City has played an important role in the story of immigration to the US. You can find out more in the museum housed in the former Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal building – many generations of immigrants have passed through this station. You can then get the ferry to either Ellis Island – the former immigrant inspection station, where there is another museum - or to Liberty Island – site of the world-famous Statue of Liberty.

With the Manhattan skyline, Ellis and Liberty Islands and the entire New York Harbour area as its dramatic backdrop, Liberty State Park is one of the largest green spaces in Jersey City. It’s a great spot for birdwatching, and activities such as biking, boating and running. At the northern end of the park is the Empty Sky memorial – the state of New Jersey’s official tribute to the 750 residents of the state who died on 9/11.

Given that the Statue towers above Jersey City, it’s perhaps no surprise that so many attractions in the city carry the Liberty name. The Liberty Science Center is a great place to come with children, who will love the hands-on exhibits, the live animals and the planetarium shows.

The city has many superb dining establishments. Why not start your day at Café Alyce, which serves great breakfasts while its eye-catching décor includes vintage chandeliers.

The unique selling point of Jersey City’s culinary offering is its large number of excellent Filipino restaurants. The chain restaurant, Max’s Restaurant, is one of the most highly regarded, while Jayhan’s Grill is a fantastic family-run establishment. There are many eateries to choose from though in the city, and you can be within walking distance of whichever you fancy visiting most when you stay in furnished apartments in Jersey City.
