Where is Montreal?

Montreal is in the southeast of Canada, on an island in the St Lawrence River, around 30 miles north of the country’s border with the United States.

It’s the country’s second-largest city, and is easily the biggest conurbation in Quebec province. The city itself is home to around 1.8 million. However, as many as 4.2 million live in the wider Montreal Metropolitan Area. This is one-eighth of Canada’s total population.

Toronto is Canada’s largest city. It’s 335 miles southwest of Montreal. Ottowa is the country’s capital and is 102 miles to the west. Quebec City  is the capital of Quebec province. It’s situated 155 miles northeast of Montreal. The official currency here is the Canadian dollar.

You might think of Canada as an English-speaking country, but Quebec is very much a French-speaking province, and Montreal is a French-speaking city. Around two-thirds of residents speak French at home.

On the other hand, half of the city’s population consider themselves to be bilingual in French and English. Provided you stay in Montreal and don’t travel to remoter areas of Quebec, you should be fine speaking English, especially in a business environment. French culture is very important here and visiting Montreal might feel very different compared to other large cities in Canada.

You can fly directly to Montreal from many cities in Europe and North America. Once you’ve arrived, the Metro and the rest of the city’s public transport network is superb, with very frequent and efficient services.

Business in Montreal

Canada is one of the top ten largest economies in the world. As its second largest city, Montreal generates around one-seventh of its national Gross Domestic Product. In the late 2010s, the city experienced some of the fastest economic growth in all of Canada.

The largest business sectors in Montreal include information technology, artificial intelligence, video game development, life sciences, fintech, and other financial services. With this significant emphasis on cutting-edge technology, Montreal’s manufacturing traditions have declined somewhat in recent years. Having said that, around 20% of the local population is still employed in the manufacturing sector. Some of the principal goods made here include food and drink, and tobacco.

Some well-known companies with significant operations in Montreal are Deloitte, Amazon, IBM, Accenture, PwC, Morgan Stanley, TD Bank, Bombardier, SAP, and Apple.

Business networking opportunities in the city are offered by organisations such as Bizmtl.com, the Montreal Business Women's Club, and the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal.

Staying in a corporate apartment in Montreal will give you the privacy, flexibility, and space to make the most of your time on your business trip.

Things to Do in Montreal

Montreal takes its name from the French for ‘Mount Royal’, and one of the first things you should do here is walk to the top of the mountain for a superb view of the city. The highest of its three peaks is 233 metres above sea level. The surrounding Mount Royal Park is a hive of recreational activity all year round, from boating and birdwatching to cycling and jogging. In the winter, many skaters and skiers come here.

To emphasise its French connections, Montreal has its own superb Notre-Dame Basilica, a replica of the Paris cathedral in its glory days. Make sure you visit to see the stained glass, the golden-starred ceiling, the 7000-pipe organ, and the other fantastic architecture of this 17th-century church. If you’re here for one of the Aura events you’re in for a treat. This event is a beguiling 20-minute light show, set to beautiful orchestral music.

Notre-Dame is located in the Old Montreal part of the city. Other highlights of this area include the Art Nouveau buildings on Avenue McGill, the interactive Science Centre museum, and the Foundation Phi modern art gallery.

Besides high-quality French cuisine, Montreal is also noted for being home to some top-notch vegan restaurants.

There’s a lot to see and do in Montreal. While you’re here for work, do try to see as much as possible in this amazing city. Of course, staying in a Situ serviced apartment in Montreal will allow you to do just that.

Transport

By Air

Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, also known as Montreal-Dorval, is located 13 miles west of the city centre. Most of the 80 or so destinations served by this airport are in the Americas – such as Toronto, New York, Chicago, Vancouver, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Mexico City. You can also fly to here from London, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Delhi, and Lisbon.

By Rail

Montreal’s Metro has more than 60 stations on four lines. Trains operate between 5.30am and 1am and run as frequently as every two minutes during peak hours. The five Exo routes provide regular services from the city to its suburbs.

Long-distance routes from Montreal include several daily trains for the six-hour trip to Toronto, a daily 11-hour journey to New York, and three trains per week undertaking the 21-hour journey to Halifax on Canada’s Atlantic coast.

By Bus

Montreal has several hundred high-frequency bus services throughout its central region and inner suburbs. These run every ten minutes or more. A night service operates on the most popular routes. A shuttle service connects the city centre to Montreal-Trudeau airport.
