Where is Ontario?

Ontario borders Manitoba in the west and Quebec in the east. In the north, its shores are washed by the waters of the Hudson and James Bays. In the south, Ontario borders the US states of Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. The largest road network covers the southeast of Ontario and connects the province to Detroit in the USA and the province of Quebec in the east. The capital city of Ottawa lies in the southeast of the country on the border with Quebec.

English is the official language of the province of Ontario, but some French will be spoken as well. The Canadian dollar is the official currency of Canada and is used for all cash and card payments. Use a currency exchange service at the nearest bank for any cash you may bring.

Business Opportunities in Ontario

Ontario is one of 13 Canadian provinces and territories located in the east of the country. This most populated province in Canada is home to 40 per cent of Canadians. It has the largest economy, which is focused mainly on manufacturing and mining. The share of Ontario in Canadian manufacturing is over 50 per cent.

The sources of the prosperity of Ontario are an abundance of natural resources, transport accessibility to the most populated areas of America, as well as the Great Lakes that allow ocean-going container ship navigation. The province produces automobiles, iron, steel, food, electrical products, chemicals, and paper.

Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario. It’s also the centre of financial and banking services in Canada. Its satellite cities offer well-developed logistics services, IT and telecom services, and industrial manufacturing. Ottawa and the National Capital Region employ the most civil servants for the federal government. The section of Highway 401 between Toronto and Waterloo is known as ‘Northern Silicon Valley’, and has more than 280,000 high-tech employees from around the world.

Ontario is creating a new IT stream and a pilot immigration programme to attract high-skilled immigrants to small communities across the province. This is part of its Provincial Immigration Programme, OINP. The new immigration stream for IT professionals is designed to attract highly-skilled professionals to Ontario's thriving tech sector in cities like Toronto, Ottawa, and Waterloo, which have seen significant growth in high-tech jobs in recent years.

Living in Ontario

Ontario is becoming the first choice for relocation for more and more professionals every year, thanks to its flexible transport connections, outstanding infrastructure, and of course the incredible Canadian wilderness. Make the most of the balance between energized city living and relaxing countryside. Ontario offers something for all tastes, from its breath-taking countryside scenery and delightful beaches to the vibrant cities packed with modern entertainment and buzzing nightlife. It can be a delightful place to live – so long as you are ready to put up with the varied weather.

Ontario is perfect for those who want to experience all four seasons at their utmost. Winters in Ontario are remarkably cold and snowy across the province. Be ready for a lot of snow and temperatures below -25 degrees in the northernmost parts of Ontario. Summers are when beaches around the Great Lakes are busy, as days are hot and sunny at around 30 degrees. Ontario is perfect if you want to enjoy both snow sports and water sports in their best respective seasons.

Ontario is famous for its stunning wilderness and excellent facilities for outdoor activities. You are spoilt for choice between hiking and skiing, kayaking, and husky sledging. Ice hockey is popular among all ages.

Ontario is known to be a safe place to live as even large cities like Toronto have a very low crime rate. Toronto is dynamic and modern and is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Canada with the most opportunities for ex-pats both for employment and social life. Ottawa is regularly voted among the best cities to live in North America as it is remarkably clean, safe, and undeniably beautiful.

Living costs across Ontario may vary, but rents and transport will be the most significant costs wherever you go. Rents can be steep in downtown Ottawa and Toronto, while transportation will be more complicated in the inner territory of the province. Distances are vast in Ontario and driving is essential. In cities, the public transport system is efficient and not costly, but needs to be used frequently.

Whatever you choose to do in this amazing province, select a Situ serviced apartment in Ontario and make the most of your time here.

Transport

By Air

Toronto Pearson is Canada's largest and busiest airport and the most important gateway to Canada serving over 32 million passengers a year. It offers regular passenger flights to the USA and Europe and has convenient connection opportunities for hundreds of destinations. The airport has excellent railway and bus connections. Travel to the city via the TTC and Go Transit systems, as well as by taxi.

Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport serves the capital of Canada and is considered one of the largest in the country - more than four million passengers use it every year. Ottawa International Airport specializes primarily in flights to the US and Europe.

Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto offers regular passenger service to the USA and welcomes around three million visitors annually.

By Train & Coach

VIA Rail Canada is Canada's largest and only long-distance rail passenger carrier in eight provinces. Tickets tend to be quite expensive and long-distance coaches are the cheaper alternative.

Go Transit is an intercity carrier of the cities in the Greater Toronto Area. This transit system includes buses and double-decker diesel trains. The service tends to be pricey, but the network is very extensive and the service is regular and punctual.

Coach Canada is the bus division of Stage Coach for North America which operates in the provinces of Ontario. It has a low-cost service under the brand name Megabus.

By Bus & City Transport

Greater Toronto Area has the largest public transport system in Ontario. Toronto TTS company provides all public transport services and includes underground, buses, and trams. All means of transport are parts of a single system of payment and transit. It is worth noting that the underground in Toronto may seem small for a city this size, but this is compensated for by an extensive bus network.

Public transport in Ottawa includes buses and the O-Train light rail line. It crosses the city from north to south at 15-minute intervals. O-Train railway stations are located close to bus terminals. Buy tickets from vending machines at the stations. The Ottawa bus route system is integrated with the transportation system of the neighbouring city of Gatineau in Quebec. Some Ottawa routes terminate in Gatineau and vice versa.

The PRESTO Card is the only means of payment for public transport other than cash. It is possible to buy various types of travel cards and load them on the PRESTO Card.
