About Stade

Where is Stade?

Stade is the oldest city in northern Germany. Because of its convenient location for international trade and water transport, it changed hands several times throughout its long history. Today it forms part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Stade lies on the banks of the River Schwinge, a tributary of the Elbe, 60 kilometres to the west of Hamburg.

There are several roads to Hamburg, but road 73 reaches there in less than an hour. The same road goes northwest towards the sea coast and Cuxhaven. Use road 74 to the southwest to Bremen, only 100 kilometres away. To join any major motorway, go to Hamburg first and then join motorway 24 to Berlin in the southeast or motorway 7 to Hannover in the south.

Living in Stade

Stade successfully combines quaint charm and modern efficiency. It used to be a prominent port and commercial hub, and its prosperous merchant past has left a significant heritage in the city. Now it is eclipsed by Hamburg, yet remains an important port on the Elbe and a lovely residential city.

You are bound to be fascinated by Stade’s winding canals and rows of charming wooden crate houses. The canals used to have a defensive function, but now their aesthetic value prevails. The most picturesque buildings are to be found along the waterfront, but the medieval inner streets are delightful.

The old town, Altstadt, is very compact, and the majority of attractions are concentrated in the northern part, ten minutes away from the train station.

Stade's Altstadt is still buzzing and makes a lovely day excursion. Narrow streets, fachwerk-style houses, gilded lions and unicorns decorating buildings – all of this and more can be found in Stade.

Former defensive structures have been converted into a park. Eight historical museums offer an informative and entertaining insight into the city’s commercial past. The biggest museum is the Swedenspeicher and tells the story of Stade and its surroundings.

The old town is surrounded by stunning canals. Charming specialist shops have plenty of hidden treasures, while cosy cafés invite you to outdoor terraces. The true gem of Stade is the old port and Fischmarkt, an absolute must. A walking tour around the harbour area is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Shop at Marktkauf-Center Stade to enjoy an excellent experience combining major high-street brands and fresh local produce and seafood. Remember to try some local specialities based on locally grown vegetables, as well as fresh fish, meat stews, puddings, and cakes. And of course, two of the oldest locally brewed beers in Lower Saxony go very well with this delicious food.
