Where is Austin?

Austin is the capital city of Texas, the second-largest state in the USA. As Texas shares its border with Mexico in the south, this makes Austin one of the most southernmost major cities in America. It is also one of the most populous state capitals, home to over 900,000 people, who live across a landmass that spans only around 350 square miles.

Passing straight through the middle of the city is the Interstate 35 highway, which stretches all the way from the bottom of Texas to Minnesota. This road allows locals and expats visiting Austin, based in the centre of the state, to be connected to other nearby Texan cities such as San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Austin is also 250 miles northeast of Nuevo Laredo situated on the Mexican border and 160 miles west of the eastern coastline that looks out on the Gulf of Mexico.

Depending on where you need to be, whether it is near a train station, an office building or the University of Texas, we have a great range of long and short term rentals in Austin that can cater to all business professionals.

Business in Austin

Austin has a lot going for it as a place to do business. Often ranking as one of the best cities in the country when it comes to affordability, quality of life and job creation, it makes sense that Austin has become such a favoured place to start a business. In fact, Austin is notoriously known as the #1 place for start-ups in the US, thanks to a local culture that is very supportive of new entrepreneurship.

In terms of industry, Austin is a tech hotspot. For years the city has represented Texas as the state's technological centre, drawing comparisons with the famous 'Silicon Valley'. Apple, Facebook, Google and eBay all have offices in what is now often described as 'Silicon Hills'; an analogous nickname combining Austin's characteristics of being home to many tech companies and hilly terrain. As well as that, the city does also perform well across science, financial, manufacturing and creative industries.

Ultimately, it is the business climate that makes Austin so attractive for corporates. Incentives include the fact that there is no personal state income tax, whilst the state and local tax burden are much lower than the national average. To learn more about why the city is great for business ventures, visit the Austin Chamber website. Here you have access to everything you need to know about profiting from the city's business infrastructure and schemes, including the hugely successful 'Opportunity Austin'.

Life in Austin

No matter where you stay, if it is a five-bedroom duplex or a studio apartment in Austin, as soon as you step out the door and explore you'll immediately notice how distinctive the city is. Culturally, Austin is blessed with a bustling music scene, a cuisine that is dominated by Tex-Mex and an abundance of iconic attractions.

In terms of music, the city is so diverse and often called the 'live music capital of the world'. The two biggest festivals held in the city are the SXSW and the ACL. The South by Southwest (SXSW) is the largest festival of its kind in the world, celebrating a collaboration between music and film, whilst the Austin City Limits Festival (ACL) welcomes around 450,000 people every year and showcases a wide variety of musical performers and genres. These events take over the city throughout March and October respectively, whilst many smaller community concerts flood Austin with musical appreciation all year round.

Restaurants play a huge part in not only this music scene but also the belief that Austin is the place to go to enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine. Breakfast tacos, barbecue-style meats and locally brewed beer are beloved across the area, but of course, like any good city, the Texan capital has a variety of restaurants serving a range of different cuisines to cater for the millions of tourists who stay in luxury apartments in Austin all year round.

As for the main attractions, where do we start? Well, what's obvious is that Austin is home to some wonderful green spaces and sites full of local nature. The most known are;

  • Ziller Park -  Spans over 350 acres along the Colorado River and  just a short walk from the city centre
  • McKinney Falls State Park - Named after a businessman, this state park offers the perfect getaway from the city. The natural landscape is home to one of Texas' best waterfalls and welcomes campers to enjoy its distinctive environment all year round.
  • Lady Bird Lake - Open to the public and part of the Colorado River, this lake is full of nature and is encircled by miles of lovely pedestrian trails and walks.

Perhaps the most iconic Austin attraction though is the Texas Capitol. The magnificent state-building, standing at over 300 foot tall, is in downtown Austin and is recognized as a National Historial Landmark and on the Register of Historical Places. It is well worth a visit as arguably the most important structure in Texas.

All in all, there's an awful lot to see, do and embrace in the capital of Texas, and it is for that reason that we at Situ offer a range of serviced apartments in Austin, to ensure anyone can enjoy a trip and work when they visit.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA)

In recent year, Austin-Bergstrom has been named one of the top ten best large airports in the US.

The next closest international airport is San Antonio, around 75 miles southwest of Austin, whilst there is also the Austin Executive airport, used for business aviation services, based near north Austin a twenty-minute drive from the city centre. Just know that when you get in touch with SITU, we can help you find corporate housing in Austin near whichever airport is best for you and your business travel plans.

Capital Metro

Austin does not bask itself in glory when it comes to car traffic. The city is known for having some of the worst traffic in the US, so many locals and expats turn to the Capital Metro public transport system to get around. The system operates bus and rail services all over the city and surrounding suburb areas.

Be sure to download the CapMetro app once you're in the city and have access to everything you need to know; including timetables, ticket information and various routes. To learn more about how to get around the city, visit either Austin Texas.gov or the Visit Austin website.

By Bus

The Capital Metro Bus System consists of over 1,500 bus stops which facilitate around eighty different bus routes. Over one million people use this bus system in the city, knowing that for just $2.50 they can get a day pass to explore the area how they wish.

Whichever way you choose to get around, or in and out of the city, SITU has a range of corporate apartments in Austin near many different transport facilities which makes it easy for corporates to travel across the city for business.
