Where is Finchley?

Finchley is in the London borough of Barnet, approximately seven miles north of central London. It includes the districts of North Finchley, East Finchley and West Finchley, as well as Church End. The area usually known as Barnet lies to the north, with Tottenham to the east. To the south is Highgate, with its cemetery, and Hampstead, famous for the Heath.

In Finchley, the old-world Victorian and Edwardian townhouses that once characterised the area are still there, but they now sit alongside more modern apartments that have brought younger residents to the area. Finchley’s fantastic transport links and local shops, pubs and restaurants make it a great place to live and work. There are three local tube stations, as well as an overground station and an extensive bus network.

Business & Economy in Finchley

Barnet Council claims that its area is home to more businesses than any of the other London boroughs. Principal sectors of employment include financial services, other professional services, education, healthcare, retail, hospitality, construction and creative arts.

The population of the area is expected to grow rapidly in the near future, and much of this increase will be amongst people of working age. Many of the people moving into the area will be highly educated young professionals, and so this really is an area with considerable potential. Some will choose to work in central London, but many will work nearer to home in suburban north London.

Business support organisations in the area include:

  • Golders Green & Finchley Business Club – part of the Women In Business Network, they hold regular meetings where members can make referrals.
  • N2 United – which aims to be a collective voice for businesses in East Finchley.
  • North London Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise – which helps businesses achieve growth, raise their profile and generate new connections and opportunities.

Ultimately, for whatever reason you are visiting the area, whether it is for a small networking event or to relocate your company, just remember there are many top-quality, corporate Finchley apartments available that can cater for your business travel needs.

Things to do in Finchley

Finchley is home to some fantastic places to socialise and meet up, including independent restaurants. The massaman curry at Bangkok Lounge is said to be excellent. You also might not find too many vegetarian Indian restaurants, but Rani is a fine example.

The Clissold Arms is a gastropub that is particularly noted for its Sunday roasts. If you’re eating outside, they will provide you with a blanket if you wish! If you’re inside, you might want to bag the Kinks Room, where the walls are covered in memorabilia relating to the legendary band, as this was the venue of their first concert in 1960.

You won’t find any of London’s large parks in the area, but there are several lovely little outdoor attractions. Cherry Tree Wood is a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation and a remnant of a medieval woodland that once stretched all the way from Highgate to Whetstone. Victoria Park has playgrounds, ornamental gardens, playing fields, tennis courts, a bowling green and a café.

The area is blessed with sites that reflect Finchley's heritage too, such as Avenue House (sometimes called Stephens House), a Grade II listed Victorian mansion with landscaped grounds. Anyone can hire the house for special occasions and events. For those who fancy a swim, there’s the lido at Great North Park.

There's plenty to do in the area, and it is for that reason that we recommend a long stay serviced apartment in Finchley, to make sure you don't miss out on anything this fantastic location has to offer.

Transport

London City Airport (LCY)

Finchley is within easy reach of all the London airports. The nearest is City Airport, 11 miles away. Then it’s 15 miles to Heathrow, 22 miles to Luton Airport, 28 miles to Stansted and 30 miles to Gatwick.

By Train

Finchley Road & Frognal is the local Overground rail station, and there are trains every few minutes to destinations such as Richmond, Stratford and Clapham Junction, but no direct services to central London.

By Bus

There are a great many bus routes in the area, with North Finchley Bus Station being a major local hub. The 13 bus serves Baker Street, Marble Arch, Park Lane and Victoria Station, so this is a very handy one to catch to go shopping or to see the sights.
