Where is New South Wales?

New South Wales is a South-eastern state of Australia that borders Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria, and its east coast is washed by the Tasman Sea.

The Australian capital city Canberra lies in the southeast of the state. The capital of New South Wales, Sydney is located on the east coast. It has become one of the largest and most expensive cities in the world.

Around 5 million people, two-thirds of the population of New South Wales, live in Greater Sydney. The A1 motorway connects Sydney to other major coastal capitals, Melbourne in Victoria and Brisbane in Queensland. Numerous highways spread from Sydney to the main inland cities.

English is the official language of New South Wales used for all communication. The most significant minority languages are Mandarin and Cantonese. The official currency used for all payments in New South Wales is the Australian Dollar. ATMs and exchange bureaus are easily available across major cities and banks exchange most foreign currencies.

Business in New South Wales

New South Wales boasts the most diverse and stable economy in Australia. The market of the state and its infrastructure are well integrated with the key foreign markets in the region.

The key contributors to the state economy are agribusiness and food processing, consumer goods manufacturing, natural resources and clean energy, healthcare, and medical technology. The newest sectors developing in New South Wales are cyber security services, field robotics, and agrotechnology.

New South Wales can undoubtedly be called the most industrialised state of Australia. On the one hand, traditional industries such as mining, engineering, shipbuilding, timber, chemical, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy are very prosperous here. On the other hand, the state has seen a significant breakthrough in cutting edge information and communication technologies and financial services. For example, the Sydney Futures Exchange is one of the twenty largest in the world.

New industries, including information technology and financial services, are largely centred in Greater Sydney and many multinational corporations have chosen Sydney's central business district for their Australian headquarters. Basing their operations in Sydney, companies benefit from a large employment pool, profitable partnerships with research and development centres, and direct access to the newest technology and facilities.

Many exporters use Sydney as their trade base because of its efficient air, sea and rail connections to the international markets. The world-class R&D centres in New South Wales show impressive accomplishments in agriculture technology, advanced manufacturing, and defence.

Sydney has become home to a thriving start-up ecosystem through the active support of the state government and a flexible migration policy. The modern network of incubators and co-working centres, shared spaces, and support and investment programmes help new entrepreneurs along their way to success.

The success of the New South Wales start-up scene is also explained by the highly skilled workforce consisting of recent local graduates and foreign specialists. The University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney provide highly qualified and inspired young specialists, and around a third of start-up founders and employees are foreign-born expats.

Living in New South Wales

Australia ranks consistently high among the best countries to live in as a family-friendly country. Sydney and New South Wales offer a spectacular quality of life and a perfect work-life balance thanks to the state’s delightful natural environment, excellent ecology, world-class education, and a diverse population.

New South Wales combines the best of Australia, bringing together the cosmopolitan Sydney with its dynamic vibe and the country’s best beaches and the amazing outdoors. The opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities all year round are unlimited. Choosing serviced apartments in Australia is a great choice for business travellers wherever they are staying in this amazing country.

The state is home to many national parks, reserves, and protected sites, some of which are listed as World Heritage Sites. A diving experience in the world's southernmost coral reef with numerous schools of fish, green turtles, and coloured corals is unforgettable. Go dolphin watching in Port Stephens or whale watching on the paradise beaches of Byron Bay and the Sapphire Coast. Follow the culture and history trail of the Aboriginal people by visiting the world's oldest ceremonial burial grounds in the Mango National Park.

Syndey attracts 2.5 million tourists annually thanks to its unique architecture and vibrant entertainment scene. Harbour Bridge is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful places in the city. Despite its rather advanced age, it is still one of the largest arched bridges in the world today. Another hallmark of the capital is the building of the Sydney Opera House, which violates all the canons of classical theatrical architecture.

Integration is made easy for newcomers, and the local community is diverse and open-minded. Around one third of New South Wales residents are foreign-born, coming from over a hundred different ancestries. High-quality healthcare and education services at all levels are available for free to all permanent residents.

Transport

By Air

Sydney Airport, named after the first Australian aviator to fly across the Pacific Ocean, Charles Kingsford-Smith, is the largest international airport in Australia and is located nine kilometres south of the city. The airport serves about 68 million people annually and its three runways are capable of handling all types of aircraft. Three terminals are available for travellers, Terminal 1 serving international flights and Terminals 2 and 3 designated for domestic travel.

The best way to get from Sydney airport to the city centre is by train or public bus. There are two railway stations at the airport, the train trip takes around 15 minutes. Trains run every 2-20 minutes between 4 am and 1 am. You can find a bus stop outside Terminal 1 which takes around 60 minutes. Buy an Opal Card for public transport at the information kiosk at the terminal or get your ticket directly from the driver.

Canberra International Airport is the main gateway to the Australian capital, serving domestic flights from across the country. It is only 15 minutes away from the centre by car, and the most common way to get to the airport is by taxi. An express shuttle from Canberra Airport to the city centre departs every hour from 8 am till 6 pm.

By Rail

Railroad transport plays a big part in domestic travel across New South Wales and in commuting around Greater Sydney. The main railroad operator in the countryside is the Australian Rail Track Corporation, while Sydney Trains are in charge of the commuter train network. Long-distance train tickets can be bought in advance online or in ticket offices at train stations.

For commuting, use the Opal card, a unified payment system for all public transport in Greater Sydney. Fares depend on the distance that you travel, so be sure to tap your card as you board and get off.

By Bus

The public transport system in Greater Sydney includes buses, light rail, and ferries. The commuting network makes it easy to get around the vast city and its suburbs. The easiest way to pay for your travel is to use the Opal Card or a credit card with a tap-and-go function. Purchase your Opal Card from newsagents, a post office, or an information kiosk at the airport. Remember to top it up with credit before you travel.
