Where is Leicester?

The city of Leicester is in the East Midlands, a region in central England. The city also belongs to the county of Leicestershire, which not only consists of Leicester but also towns such as Loughborough, Hinckley and Melton Mowbray. The Leicester population is over 300,000 strong though, making it the largest city in the county and region, as well as the 10th largest in England.

Despite the Leicester-London considered ‘do-able’, with the capital being just under 100 miles away, corporates also choose to work in Leicester based on the city’s geographic traits and business climate. A focal point of this is Leicester’s transport network.

Travelling to the Leicester city centre by car is easy thanks to the M1, which passes on the left-hand side of county town as far north as Sheffield and southwardly as far as London. The nearby, busy East Midlands Airport is hugely beneficial, making overseas business travel in-and-out of the city easy, thus creating a demand for luxury serviced apartments in Leicester. There is a Leicester train station too, which is connected to services running to major cities such as Sheffield, Nottingham and London.

All in all, even guests just staying in Leicester apartments for short stays will quickly realise how well-connected and accessible the city is to the rest of the country and beyond.

Businesses in Leicester

Centrally-situated in the heart of England and just four hours away from Europe, the people of Leicester have access to a vast range of business opportunities. These people belong to a talented workforce too. This is due to the city having many leading educational institutions, including the University of Leicester, De Montfort University and Leicester College, which pump out thousands of graduates each year. Student accommodation in Leicester is very common as a result.

With all this considered, outsiders looking in must realise that Leicester is one of the best cities in the UK to do business. However, It is not just business travel to Leicester that is popular, business start-ups in Leicester are also common, which is unsurprising with major companies such as Next, Dunelm and Santander all having UK headquarters there, with the latter stating this is simply because of the city’s ‘prime East Midland location’. What’s more, is that the future is even brighter for Leicester. The Leicester City Council is already in the process of pushing through a multi-million-pound investment into the regeneration process of the city in the hope of making the Leicester business centre even more welcoming and increasing profitable for the companies already operating there.

Regardless of whether you are relocating to the city or just attending corporate events in Leicester, Situ has many high-quality Leicester apart-hotels which are sure to cater to travel requirements.

What is Leicester famous for?

Leicester is one of the UK’s oldest cities and has a history dating back at least two thousand years to before the arrival of the Romans. If you visit, you’ll find the ruins of a Roman Bath House at the Jewry Wall Museum, and an even older Iron Age hillfort in Burrough on the Hill.

The city was the birthplace of Modern Standard English, originally developed as a way of allowing the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings to communicate, today it is used by more than a billion people worldwide. Leicester’s history has also been under the spotlight in recent times. The city has become well known as the burial place of King Richard III, whose remains were discovered in the city. After the king was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field, he was brought back to the city, but over the years his burial place was lost.

Then, in 2012, his remains were found buried, rather unglamorously, beneath a car park in Leicester and after an archaeological investigation which confirmed his identity, in 2015 he was reburied in Leicester Cathedral. To find out more about the city’s local history be sure to visit one of the many Leicester museums, such as the New Walk, the Newarke Houses or the Guildhall, all of which are based near our range of studio apartments in Leicester.

Things to do in Leicester

Enjoying the homely comfort of fully-furnished apartments in Leicester in your free time may be tempting, but there are also some many things to see in Leicester too.

First, there are the Leicester shopping centres. Together, the Highcross Shopping complex (also known as Leicester Mall) and the old-fashioned ‘The Lanes’ offer a great retail experience. If you are wondering where are the best places to eat in Leicester, these spots are the answer, home to many of the most popular restaurants in Leicester. As well as many other fantastic eateries, cafes and a wide array of high-quality shops, these centres are a dream for shopping enthusiasts.

In terms of culture Leicester is attractive to tourists too. The award-winning Curve theatre is immensely popular, right in the heart of Leicester's Cultural Quarter. There are several live music venues dotted across the city too, such as the Guildhall, the Soundhouse or the De Montfort Hall whilst the Leicester’s festival calendar is jam-packed as well, with events such as the Riverside Festival, the Caribbean Carnival or the Diwali event encouraging tourists from across the UK to visit the city all year round.

Or if this is all a bit too much, you can always just fall back on the many welcoming pubs in Leicester, hubs of social activity in the city.

Transport

East Midlands Airport (EMA)

Being in central England means that Leicester has many airports within proximity, with the largest and closest being the East Midlands Airport just under twenty miles away. Around 5 million people fly in-and-out of this airport each year.

The next largest alternative to the East Midlands International Airport is the Birmingham Airport which is just under an hours drive away from Leicester city centre. Other, smaller aviation facilities include Leicester Airport and Coventry Airport. Whichever way you plan to fly to-and-from the city, knowing that city-centre apartments in Leicester are never too far from a major airport is hugely beneficial.

Leicester Train Station

Once you visit Leicester you’ll soon realise that the city and it’s surrounding areas are not blessed with many train stations. In fact, the only station in the city is Leicester Railway Station. Operated by East Midlands Railway, the station is based along the Birmingham-Peterborough and Midland Main Line, with the latter running from London St Pancras to Nottingham.

Other train stations just outside the city include; Syston, South Wigston and Narborough.

Leicester Bus Stations

Leicester has two bus stations; St Margaret’s Bus station is on Gravel Street whilst the newly-developed Haymarket Bus station is on Belgrave Gate. The three main bus operators around the city centre are Arriva, First Bus and Centre Bus.
