About Mayfair

Mayfair is an exclusive area of London home to around 5,000 residents. Its bordered by Oxford Street to the north and separated from Hyde Park by Park Lane to the west. Well known as one of the capital’s most desirable districts, the area has some of London’s highest property prices and a number of high-profile businesses. Yet, it still manages to contain quite a bit of residential property. A significant proportion of the population are business people too, making the demand for Mayfair temporary housing higher.

Business travellers coming to stay in our serviced apartments in Mayfair will find them an affordable, yet elegant alternative in an area known for its exclusive hotels. There’s a reason it costs £2000 to land on a Mayfair hotel in Monopoly! It might also be because Mayfair is architecturally impressive. There are many fine examples of the grand Victorian design here, that helps to make London the city it is. The luxury and open green space associated with the area is also unique. Mayfair is not only home to twenty-six Michelin Starred restaurants and London’s largest concentration of luxury shops and restaurants, but is also surrounded by two Royal Parks.

HISTORY

The story behind Mayfair’s name is surprisingly simplistic. It originates from when King James II granted royal permission for a fair to be held in 1686. The annual spring festival took place on what Shepard’s Market (previously known as Market Street) and was coincidently named ‘May Fair’. The area at the time was very aristocratic. The Fire of London in 1666 forced a high concentration of rich Londoners to then flock to Mayfair.

Wealthy upper-class citizens then dominated the area for the following centuries. The area, therefore, became a place of opulence, luxury and business, as well as fashionable to visit and live. The Second World War setbacks were resolved quickly too, meaning Mayfair was able to maintain the position it still holds today, of luxury and wealth. It’s the most affluent streets, such as Bond and Oxford Street, which reflect the area’s history most. Travellers can choose to stay in Mayfair aparthotels close to the district’s historic attractions.

DOING BUSINESS

The thriving business sector in Mayfair makes the London district one of the most popular in the capital for corporates. After all, a significant majority of the residing population are professionals, ageing between 30 and 40 years old. Despite the area’s small size, its daily population can rise to over 85,000. This is down to the array of underground stations available in the area, allowing corporates to visit from all directions. The Crossrail Project will only enable easy travel further, with the number of passengers travelling through the likes of Bond Street station expected to increase by more than 40%.

What’s more is business people are attracted to Mayfair’s tag as the ‘top luxury neighbourhood’, boasting an array of Michelin starred eateries and high-end retail shops. Since the start of the millennium, 150 new retailers have opened premises in Mayfair as a result of the area’s newfound popularity. Investing here is an attractive proposition too, as Mayfair property values are amongst the highest in the country. The average pound (£) per square foot value of properties has risen by 196% since 2004. Not only is Mayfair a great place to enjoy a business lifestyle, but also a place to make a profit. Utilising the business advantage of the area is easily achievable when staying in Mayfair corporate accommodation.

A day in Mayfair could also involve visiting the many art exhibits and galleries, whilst staying in either Mayfair short term accommodation or extended stay apartments. Where better to start then the Royal Academy of Arts, host to some of London’s finest art exhibitions. The passion involved attracts over one million people to the site every year. However, if it’s a bit of peace and quiet visitors are after, spent relaxing in the great outdoors, Mayfair also has an abundance of surrounding green space.
