Where is Bloomsbury?

Bloomsbury is a very central district of London. It’s just to the west of the City of London and the financial centre, and just north of the West End’s theatre district.

From Russell Square in the heart of Bloomsbury, it’s just one mile to Leicester Square in the West End. St Paul’s Cathedral is one-and-a-half miles away, while it’s two miles to Trafalgar Square. The Houses of Parliament are two-and-a-half miles from Bloomsbury.

Bloomsbury is the heart of student London, with both the University of London and University College London having their headquarters here. The area has a very high proportion of residents in their twenties.

The area could also be said to be the heart of tourist London, perhaps because it’s close to many of the mainline rail stations. There’s a high concentration of tourist accommodation, especially along the Woburn Place/Southampton Row corridor.

Bloomsbury is served by seven different Underground lines and numerous bus routes, making this one of the best-connected parts of London.

It’s also one of the most pleasant parts of London to walk around. Bloomsbury is noted for its elegant Georgian squares such as Russell Square, Queen Square, Tavistock Square, and Bloomsbury Square itself.

Business & Economy

Perhaps what Bloomsbury is most famous for is the Bloomsbury Group, a collection of artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived here in the early twentieth century.

The area is still home to creatively minded individuals today. Bloomsbury is home to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and to the Bloomsbury Publishing Group. The universities are major employers in the area.

Bloomsbury-based business people might like to check out Bloomsbury BNI, which hosts events with guest speakers and provides opportunities for members to refer business to one another. Another useful group might be the Bloomsbury & Holborn Women In Business Network, which holds monthly networking meetings.

Things To Do in Bloomsbury

The British Museum’s permanent collection comprises eight million objects, collected from all over the world and covering a time span of two million years. This famous Bloomsbury institution also hosts a fantastic programme of changing exhibitions.

The Foundling Museum tells the story of the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity. It also hosts regular exhibitions. Artists whose work has been shown here include William Hogarth, Grayson Perry, Tracy Emin, and Cornelia Parker.

For a great choice of restaurants and cafés, Bloomsbury locals head for Charlotte Street. There’s a great variety of international menus to sample here, from both restaurants and more casual venues such as diners. The cuisine on offer includes French, Spanish, and Japanese.

Whatever you choose to do while on your business trip here, choose a Situ serviced apartment in Bloomsbury for a serene and private space to stay.
