About Kensington, Central London

Overview

Kensington is one of London's most exclusive districts and home to the Natural History Museum and Royal Albert Hall

About Kensington

This large area in Central London roughly borders Chelsea to the south and Knightsbridge and Hyde Park to the east, with its northern extent perhaps being as far as Holland Park Avenue and Bayswater Road. It is definitely among London’s more high-brow areas, resplendent with street after street of Victorian houses, Kensington is home to grand architecture in the form of iconic buildings like the Natural History Museum and the Royal Albert Hall. It also has some of the capital’s most exclusive shopping and is bisected by the Cromwell Road, a major road route that leads out to the M4 and makes Kensington a good base for those coming to stay in serviced apartments.

The commercial heart of Kensington is Kensington High Street. Although perhaps just a shade less iconic, it can be compared to Chelsea’s King’s Road in some respects, being home to major labels and some high-class boutiques, but there is something just a little bit more ‘earthy’ about it. Kensington High Street is also home to several major labels in the UK music industry, and this might also be why guests come to stay in aparthotels in Kensington. Along with Portobello Road, just to the north, you have an excellent shopping and eating-out area, with good market-type offerings, too.

The Cromwell Road area is where it’s at for things to do. The Natural History and Science Museums are free for entry – although donations are welcome – and are large enough for those who like to read all the information to spend possibly several days in each. Of course, if you’ve brought the kids to your Kensington accommodation, then you might still stretch out a full day between the two. Just be aware that, on busy days, unless you turn up early there will likely be up to an hour’s queuing time to get in. Also in this area are the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Albert Hall, an astonishing venue for all sorts of live music. The renowned educational institutions of the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London can also be found in the same block.

A good number of our Kensington extended stay apartments are located either side of this section of Cromwell Road, which is also convenient for the large Bupa Cromwell Hospital site and conveniently has a large Sainsbury’s for keeping well-stocked.

The main streets like Cromwell Road and Kensington High Street are major bus routes, but our city apartment guests will also find Kensington well covered by the tube, especially in the southern half. Gloucester Road and South Kensington tube stations are both on the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines, while High Street Kensington sits on the same Circle and District circuit. There are also West Kensington on the District line and Kensington Olympia on the Overground.
