Since such humble beginnings, from being founded by the Romans back in the first century and being known as ‘Londinium’, the English capital has come such a long way to become what it is today. Some of the most iconic moments in world history then followed. London gave the world its first metro system, the London Underground having first opened in 1863. Other great inventions that originated from here include the nuclear chain reaction, the powered vacuum cleaner, the microphone and the cash machine.

Resident Ada Lovelace created the world’s first computer program back in 1843 whilst London also introduced the world to its first traffic lights.
