About East London

What is informally considered East London lies east of London’s financial heart, The City, and north of the River Thames. Seven London Boroughs lie partly or wholly within East London, with the most central of them being Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest. Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs fall within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and business travellers looking to stay in serviced apartments in East London are often planning to stay in the area. As such, Situ has numerous options available there.

Areas like Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel and Wapping are all convenient for guests on an East London short stay who need access to The City, where there is much less availability of accommodation and it tends to be prohibitively expensive. Several tube lines run through these areas, with the Central and District lines, as well as the Docklands Light Railway, being the main lines that link East London to The City.

If you’re staying in these areas, St Katherine’s Docks is an excellent spot for an evening out, or perhaps to enjoy a Sunday dinner close to the river. The docks are pretty much right next to Tower Bridge, and visitors can head on inside to the exhibition there, up to the where the glass floor makes you feel as if you are standing suspended far above the road below. St Katherine’s Pier and Tower Pier also run a variety of cruises and riverboat services close by.

Another popular area for East London city apartments are the Canning Town and Silver Town areas. Still close to the financial hub of Canary Wharf, these areas are also convenient for London City Airport. ExCeL London, a premier events venue and convention centre, is situated virtually right next to the airport and by the dock there. If you’re staying in this part of London, or even just visiting it, pop to Emirates Royal Docks, where the Emirates Air Line, a cable car link across the Thames makes a more affordable alternative to a ride on The London Eye and provides exceptional views as you rise to a height of about 300 feet above the river, before depositing travellers in North Greenwich, just a short walk from the O2 Arena.

Certain areas of East London, Hackney in particular, are these days very much the ‘cool’ part of the city that lies north of the river, the ‘real’ London that perhaps 15 or 20 years ago had a bad reputation which was – mostly – deserved but is now much revitalised. Areas like Dalston and the Kingsland Road have become trendy hipster neighbourhoods perfect to for finding quality accommodation and, while East London has always been known for its markets, what were once seen as cut-price shopping destinations where you were as likely to find a ‘knock-off’ as a bargain, are now the stylish alternative to the chain stores and brand boutiques of Central London. Sunday in Brick Lane Market, for instance, can be just about as eclectic a mix of shopping, food and entertainment as you are likely to find.
