HISTORY

Knowledge of Bethnal Green in history first comes in the 13th century when it was described as ‘Blithehale’. Commonly translated as ‘happy corner’, the land supposedly grew outwards around what is the present tube station. Amongst the changes throughout the growth of the area was the district’s name. It changed from ‘Blithehale’ to ‘Blethenal Green’ to ‘Bethan Hall Green’ before finally being named Bethnal Green.

The East End district then remained relatively indifferent up until the 1700s, as a peaceful retreat on the outskirts of London. This was prior to the arrival of developments and industry. The following centuries saw Bethnal Green become known for market gardens, the silk-weaving industry and boxing royalty links. With great successes came great falls for Bethnal Green though.

The area was branded a ‘slum’ in the nineteenth century, only to then fall victim to one of the worst civilian disasters. During a World War air raid in 1943, a stampede ensued on the stairs of Bethnal Green tube station. The result was an unfortunate pile up, killing over 170 people. The award-winning memorial honouring the tragedy is worth visiting for an insight into a big aspect of the area’s history.
